Glossary

Here's a list of terms you'll come across when dealing with Pokémon fan fiction. Constructive feedback welcome.

AAMRN

Ash and Misty Romance Novel. A story (of any length) involving romance between Ash and Misty.

AAML

Ash and Misty love.

Advanceshipping

Holding or relating to the view that Ash and May should have a romantic relationship.

AU

Alternate Universe. Stories in which the author has chosen to vary some aspects of the setting away from what is considered canonical.

CO

Cross-over.

concrit

Constructive criticism. Offering constructive criticism.

Contestshipping

Holding or relating to the view that Drew and May should have a romantic relationship.

cross-over

A story involving characters or elements from two different settings, e.g., Pokémon and Harry Potter.

Egoshipping

Holding or relating to the view that Gary and Misty should have a romantic relationship.

fanfic

Short for "fan fiction". A fan fiction story.

fic

Short for "fiction". A story, commonly referring to a fan fiction story.

grammar

The way in which different different types of words are combined to make sentences. Some fan fiction authors need to work on this.

Hoennshipping

Holding or relating to the view that Brendan and May should have a romantic relationship.

JAJRN

Jessie and James Romance Novel. A story (of any length) involving romance between James and Jessie.

new trainer fic

A story about an original character starting their Pokémon journey.

oneshot

A very short story without chapters.

OC

Original Character. A character made up by the author rather than one already featured in the game/anime.

OT

Original Trainer. A story about an original character's Pokémon journey, such as a new trainer fic.

Pikachupi

The name by which Pikachu calls Misty.

Pikapi

The name by which Pikachu calls Ash.

plot

The sequence of events that forms the basis of a story. Some fan fiction authors need to make sure that they invent their own.

Pokéfic

Short for "Pokémon fan fiction". A Pokémon fan fiction story. This term isn't very common, but I like to use it.

Pokéshipper

One who holds the view that Ash and Misty should have a romantic relationship.

Pokéshipping

Holding or relating to that Ash and Misty should have a romantic relationship.

punctuation

The rules for using non-alphabetic characters such as full stops and quotation marks to indicate various things about the structure and meaning of sentences and paragraphs. Some fan fiction authors need to work on this.

RN

Romance Novel. A romance story (of any length), especially one whose focus is other than romance between Ash and Misty or between Jessie and James.

Rocketshipper

One who holds the view that Jessie and James should have a romantic relationship.

Rocketshipping

Holding or relating to that Jessie and James should have a romantic relationship.

Twerpshipping

Pokéshipping. This term is predominantly used by Team Rocket fans.

songfic

A story based on a song, intermingling lines of lyrics with prose. These rarely work and usually infringe copyright, so I don't recommend writing them.

spelling

The sequence of letters used to write a word in the way that people expect it to be written. Some fan fiction authors need to work on this.
