Pokémon Fan Fiction

Pokémon Fanfic of the Month

Here's the list of Pokémon Fanfics of the Month. They're the best Pokémon stories I've come across on the web.

January 2008
The New Recruit
by RocketVeteran at fanfiction.net.
Short, but chilling.
November 2007
A Mary Sue Alphabet
by Irony-chan at fanfiction.net.
A poetic tribute to Mary Sues. A Harry Potter category fic, but a lot of the sentiments apply to Pokémon fan fiction as well.
September 2007
Dark Prophecy
by Marlex at fanfiction.net.
"An ancient prophecy tells of a time when a forgotten evil will return to the world. Little do Ash and Misty know that they are about to drawn into a web of terror and deceit. Who can they trust when the world is coming to an end?" (Mature readers only.)
August 2007
Scyther's Story
by Dragonfree at fanfiction.net.
An interesting interpretation of Scyther society told through the life of one of their number. Original and thought-provoking (Dragonfree's fics usually are). Unsuitable for younger readers.
July 2007
The Ballad of Captain Clefairy
by Shuko at Bulbagarden Forums.
A fun piece of creative writing.
January 2007
Confrontation
by Shagti2 at The Pokemon Tower.
I've hesitated promoting this story because I don't think it will have wide appeal and because some of the author's other stories are poor or perverted. However, I personally found this short story engrossing and moving. See what you think.
December 2006
A Pokemon Alphabet for Little Trainers by Pink Parka Girl
The Elements by Keleri
Two poems from fanfiction.net. Enjoy.
November 2006
Sway With Me by Ash Junior and
Calendar by Anonymous
at The Pokemon Tower.
Two romances nominated for last month's Best In Category Award.
September 2006
A Fourney Jic
by Clare at The Pokemon Tower.
Life of a Character
by Dragonfree at fanfiction.net.
Two well-written parodies of not-so-well-written fan fiction, by different authors. A good laugh and some good lessons for would-be authors to take to heart.
August 2006
Afraid to Fly by Emerald Milotic
So Alone by MistyLover87
at fanfiction.net.
A sad poem and a classic tragedy, both well told. Bring your tissue box.
July 2006
Mew
Chains
by Dragonfree, at fanfiction.net.
Two short stories this month by the same author, one about Mew, the other about Mewtwo. Unsuitable for younger readers.
March 2006
A True Master
by G-Force, at Pokemon Fanfiction Critic.
An old story at an abandoned web site, but still worth a read. Not quite your usual fanfic, but all the better for it. Unsuitable for younger readers.
February 2006
Two short stories by the same author...
A Meal Fit for a Master.
A nicely written and unusual short story. Read it the first time to get the punch. Read it the second time to realize what all the nuances were. (It might upset very young readers.)
Pikachu
A wonderful rendition of Abba's song, Waterloo, retold from Team Rocket's point of view.
By Agent 99, at The Pokemon Tower.
January 2006
The Myth of Shadowrun
by Mystic Vaporeon, at fanfiction.net.
A sequel to last month's Legends of the Tide with an even better plot and a remarkable ending.
December 2005
Legends of the Tide
by Mystic Vaporeon, at fanfiction.net.
An imaginitive novelette-length Pokemon fanfic from the early days of Pokémon fan fiction. In the days before most of us knew how to write good Poké-fics, this was a great pioneering work and is still fun to read.
November 2005
Wind of Dreams
by Rayinte, formerly at The Pokemon Library.
This story starts off as a "new trainer" fic. Now before you say you've read a gazillion "Trainer gets Pokémon from Professor Tree and goes on a catching spree and gym rampage" fics, let me tell you you'll be pleased with this very original story. It will keep you in suspense till the very end.
October 2005
Fate's Game
by E_Evee, at The Pokemon Tower.
The original blurb says it all: The Pokemon world has gone through some changes. In the stillness a new breed of Pokemon and trainer has emerged. The tale of an eevee hybrid trying to make sense of her world. While this story has some imperfections, it's full of excitement, mystery and intrigue.
September 2005
The Decision
by The Jolt Master, at The Pokemon Tower.
A very different short story by the Pokemon Tower webmaster himself.
August 2005
The Mirror World Menace
by Andrew, at The Pokemon Tower.
A story about a parallel Pokémon world where things are somewhat different and how it comes into contact with the one we know and love.
July 2005
One
by Dragoness, at fanfiction.net.
A sequel to Making My Way, last month's fanfic of the month, completing the trilogy. Well, it's a kind-of sequel, an alternative ending to the last chapter of the previous story. Mature readers only—I wouldn't recommend this for anyone under 16.
June 2005
Making My Way
by Dragoness, at fanfiction.net.
An amazing sequel to Everything Changes, last month's fanfic of the month. The ending is unusual, but she pulled it off remarkably well.
May 2005
Everything Changes
by Dragoness, at fanfiction.net.
An exciting and well-written story with a surprise ending. The story used the idea that Giovanni was Ash's father. That's not so popular anymore, but if you take into consideration that the story was written several years ago, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by this author's style and ingenuity.
April 2005
Twisted Hierarchy
by Obsidian Blade, at fanfiction.net.
A short but compelling story by one of The Pokemon Tower's eminent authors. I can't say much without spoiling it, so just click, read and enjoy. Unsuitable for younger readers due to some violence and serious themes.
Note: this story is also a new fanfic on this site.
March 2005
The New Trainer!
by Ace Sanchez, at Ace's Index.
A fan fiction parody by an early and influential Pokémon fanfic author. This story is a send-up of many early attempts at writing new trainer fics. Unsuitable for very young readers due to the nature of some of the humour. If you never read some of those early fics, you may miss some of this fic's allusions and subtleties, but... count yourself lucky!
February 2005
A Soul Shared
by X-Parrot, at The Pokemon Tower.
A very sensitive story about all the regular characters, but set in the future. Superbly Rocketshippy and Pokéshippy. No spoilers here folks, but it had me in tears by the end.
January 2005
Emerald: A New World
by JLB, at Pokemon World.
Perhaps not as polished as some of the other fanfics of the month, but one amazing plot, and plenty of excitement along the way. There is some violence, so it's unsuitable for younger readers.
December 2004
The Watcher
by Fossil Magikarp, formerly at The Pokemon Library
I've started noticing another genre of Pokémon fan fiction, the Pokémon horror story. This month's story is a good example of its class and a compelling read. Definitely unsuitable for very young readers.
November 2004
Enter the Dark Mew
by Diamond Eevie, at The Pokemon Tower.
An entertaining story about Gary Oak who meets his match in a new villain who is apparently associated with a mischievous Mew. Great characterisation, nice humour and a touch of romance. (Perhaps not suitable for very young readers due to the nature of some of the humour.)
October 2004
Kindness and Cruelty
by an unknown author.
A serious but compelling story about the origins of Mewtwo. (This story is unsuitable for younger readers due to some violence.)
September 2004
The TRUE Role Reversal
by Ace Sanchez, at Ace's Index.
After a year's worth of serious fanfics of the month, here's a comical short story in which Pokémon and people switch roles. Good for a laugh, with a cute twist at the end.
August 2004
Badgequest: Hidden Machine Saga
by Cyberwraith9, at fanfiction.net.
One of Cyberwraith9's masterpieces, this story is about how Ash-tachi are on a quest to find all the HMs. Sounds boring? Well, tell you what! With threads, plots and characters intertwined leading to a climax that will have you on the edge of your seat, this story is a must-read!
July 2004
Brothers, Rebel
by Lizzie Thompson, at Pokepersonalities.
Another interpretation to Pokémon battles. A short but thought-provoking story.
June 2004
Dreamer
by McWizardX, at fanfiction.net.
Perhaps not as polished as some of the other fanfics of the month, but no less exciting. An innovative storyline that includes many flashbacks, often of the same scene from various points of view, that slowly let you piece the plot together. I won't say more so I don't give away any spoilers. (Unsuitable for younger readers.)
May 2004
Light of a Dark Black Night
by Morbane, at fanfiction.net.
What does a Pokemon feel when it's been abandoned by its trainer? A sensitive and exciting journey of personal growth told from a Pokemon's point of view.
Added note: this story is now a fanfic on this site.
April 2004
A Cleffa's Tale
by Lonepichu, at The Pokemon Tower.
A story that reads like a lovely folk tale with likeable characters, plenty of pathos, and a fine ending. Perhaps not as polished as earlier fanfics of the month, but definitely worth a read.
March 2004
Dreaming
by Mirei, at The Pokemon Tower.
This poignant story, unusual in that it's set in the real world, really deserves to be read.
Added note: this story is now a fanfic on this site.
February 2004
Two of a Kind
by Eji, at Brock-o-rama.
A fanfic with Brock as the main character. At last Brock finds a girl who likes him. Everything seems perfect. What could go wrong?
January 2004
Shrike
by Dash.
A story about a lanky, inexperienced youth that, with the help of a Pokémon, finds courage, faces responsibility, and... I'm not telling how it ends. Well worth your while to go and read. (There is some prose that would be difficult for younger readers to follow as well as some violent scenes.)
December 2003
Me and My Flame
by Wynnyelle, at Charizard Valley.

This full length novel is unquestionably the best Pokémon fanfic I've ever read, and one of my favourite works of fiction even over works by professional authors. It was also an early and controversial story which broke new ground. The theme is, what would the world be like if Pokémon were real. They're born, hunt to live, mate to reproduce, and die. My only criticism is that there is too much swearing. There's plenty more I can say but I don't want to give away any spoilers, so follow the link and enjoy the story.

(Note: there is occasional violence, swearing and adult themes. Strictly mature readers only for this fic. If you're under 16, sorry, but this is fic not for you.)

This story is also available at fanfiction.net.

The way Wynn's done her links prevent the story from being archived. I'm putting links to each chapter here in the hope that maybe web.archive.org will eventually find them and save them.

November 2003
The Distance from Yesterday
by Fish, at The Pokemon Tower.
Set in a alternate universe in which Pokémon battles are banned, Ash and Gary are the best of friends, and other characters have made different decisions that have altered the course of their lives, this well-written story is packed with action and excitement, tragedy and tears, romance and a few quips along the way. (Occasional violence and swearing—unsuitable for younger readers.)
October 2003
Against All Odds
by Matt Morwell, at fanfiction.net.
A great, well-written story with some profound themes. It's difficult to describe without giving too much away, so I'll just simply say that it's the best story I've read so far at fanfiction.net, and I can highly recommend it. (It's probably too difficult for very young readers to appreciate. There's also occasional violence.)
Added note: this story is now a fanfic on this site.
September 2003
The Long Road to Glory
by Oddish, at The Oddish Grove.
A new trainer fic about a spunky, lovable kid called Nicky Hart. There's plenty of originality, fun and excitement.
Added note: Book 2 is now complete.
