Mew's Heart (Il Cuore di Mew)

by Vitani (translated by Raichu)

Our story unfolds shortly after Mewtwo left with Mew, the one from whom his creators modelled him. In spite of their practically opposite characters, they had learnt by then to get on so well that they were virtually inseperable: where one was, the other was there also. They had returned to the forest where Mew lived, of which Mewtwo often dreamed. They did practically everything together—predominantly because of Mew, who so wanted his clone never to separate from him. This did not annoy Mewtwo the slightest, who, ulitmately, only wanted someone to care about him, and whom he had found.

For whoever does not remember their story, we shall briefly summarize it:

A group of scientists went to a forest with the aim of finding the remains of Mew, a legendary Pokémon that most believed extinct—but who instead was following them—in order to clone him. Nevertheless, they found a hair of Mew's tail, from which they cloned Mew, and thus originated Mewtwo. Unfortunately, when the super clone realized that these humans created him solely as an experiment and that they would never trully care about him, he rebelled and killed them. After that, Giovanni, the treacherous head of Team Rocket, caught up with him and asked him to be his partner. However, the Pokémon realized that he passed from one prison to another, rebelled once again, and decided to act alone.

Taking advantage of his immense mental powers, Mewtwo constructed a castle on New Island, and invited the best trainers of the world for a match against the best Pokémon master of the world (without revealing that he was a Pokémon). At this match, Ash, Misty and Brock also participated, but soon enough they discovered Mewtwo's true intentions—to sieze their Pokémon in order to clone them, and destroy the true Pokémon with an army of much more powerful copies.

In the mean time Mew also arrived, while every Pokémon had engaged in an absurd battle with their clone with the result that both the clones and the originals soon found themselves wiped out on the ground. Meanwhile Mew and Mewtwo were engaged in battle. Were they to hurl one more strike, they would have consumed the other Pokémon. To avoid a disaster, Ash put himself between the bursts of energy hurled by the two Pokémon, leaving him lifeless.

Immediately, Pikachu ran to his trainer and tried to resuscitate him with some small electric shocks. Not succeeding, the electric mouse began to cry, immediately imitated by the other Pokémon, who cried the death of one who had always treated them as friends. According to a legend, Pokémon tears are miraculous, and Ash regained his life. After this, Mewtwo saw the great internal force that unites Pokémon, whether or clones or originals. He understood the true significance of life, and uttered the most beautiful phrase of the century:

"The way in which one comes into the world is irrelevant; it is what one does with the gift of life that determines who you are."

As we were saying, by now two years had passed since the time Mewtwo flew away with Mew, and he and the small psychic cat had become inseperable.

It had been about a month since both Mew and Mewtwo had been having strange dreams. Mew was seeing Mewtwo lying lifeless on the ground, behind him an obscure shadow that had a strange familiarity. Mewtwo, on the other hand, was seeing Mew, crying in despair, having been hurled violently to the ground by someone, someone with a long purple tail. Mewtwo feared to know what was to befall, but nonetheless decided not to give the matter any concern.

They were sleeping. Mewtwo awoke first, and saw Mew who was sleeping peacefully curled up beside him. Mew had a strange expression on his face, smiling, but as if he were about to burst into tears. By then Mewtwo was accustomed to life in the forest at the foot of Rainbow Mountain, the same mountain that he always saw in his dreams. Among the Pokémon he had come to know were a Pikachu and his son, a little Pichu. The Pokémon would often come together and Mew would begin to play happily with the other two.

That's just what happened that day: they had arranged to meet in a small clearing in the middle of the forest, and when Pichu, Pikachu and Mew were jumping joyfully on some pink spheres that Mew had created. Knotted on his tail, Mew had a small yellow bow that had been made specially for him by Mewtwo, who had wanted to make a small present for him.

Mewtwo watched the scene from a distance, and when Mew called him over to play with him, Mewtwo answered him: "Sorry, but I have my dignity to defend—I'm not at all like you."

Mew did not worry about his reply, and went back to play. Then just as he, Pichu and Pikachu were at the highest point of their jump (quite a few metres from the ground), the sphere burst. All three would have crashed to the ground if it were not for Mewtwo, who, seeing what happened, in an impulse of pity, reduced their impact with the ground by creating his own blue sphere.

Needless to say, Mew, affectionate as he was, looked gratefully at Mewtwo, and straight away leapt up to him and hugged him. Poor Mewtwo pulled a bit of a strange face.

"Bah! I should've been used to this by now," he thought shaking his head in resignation. Mewtwo noticed that Mew had become fond of the yellow bow he had given him as a present. On the other hand, he thought, it's the first (and only) gift that I've given him. It's natural that he holds it in such regard.

That night, Mew couldn't get to sleep and decided to go for a short wander. Having arrived at the summit of a small hill from where he could enjoy a splendid view, Mew stopped and savoured the fresh, night-time breeze. Suddenly, he became aware of a strange presence behind him, and turned, thinking that it must be Mewtwo. But turning around, he discovered that his nightmare was to become a reality.

The following day, Mewtwo woke up and noticed that Mew wasn't with him as usual. He's gone for a trip around the place, he thought. He tried to establish telepathic contact with him, but he noticed that contact had been broken. That alarmed him: how could contact be broken? It had never been possible before. It could only happen if he wanted it to happen, or else if someone stronger than them interrupted it, emitting psychic energy waves at a higher frequency. But no-one stronger than them existed...

The days went by, and almost a week had passed since Mew had vanished without leaving a trace. Mewtwo had reached the conclusion that Mew had to go away for some personal reason, and that he broke telepathic contact so as not to let him know where he could be found. Even their friend Pikachu had come to ask for news, and, after Mewtwo had explained the situation to him, said (obviously, in the language of Pokémon):

"In my opinion, you should go and look for him. After all, who told you that he left voluntarily? And even if that's the case, if you speak to him in person, you'll have the chance to clarify the matter. Think about it well." He left with these words.

Mewtwo decided to follow Pikachu's advice and think about it.

Wandering about Rainbow Mountain, he came to the small hill where Mew had vanished. Why did you do it, Mew? That question was tormenting him now for so long, he couldn't resign himself to the psychic cat's disappearance. While he was examining the view, he noticed something small and yellow among the grass. As he was collecting it, he quivered and his eyes opened wide: it was Mew's yellow bow, or rather, what was left of it. It was obvious that there had been a fight, but against whom? Moreover, who could be so strong as to break their telepathic contact?

These were the questions that crowded his mind, and he decided that the following day he would have to begin his investigations.

Indeed that was easy to say, but where could he begin, seeing that he could not contact him, and that he didn't even have the slightest idea of where to begin to look for him. Then he thought about the fight that Mew must've had. Could he even be dead? But he refused to believe that, Mew couldn't be dead. But if he wasn't dead, what had happened to him? And who was the one against whom he clashed? Thinking about this, his gaze fell on the remains of the yellow ribbon that he still held in his hands. Perceiving something strange, he brought it up to his face and suddenly smelt Mew's odour coming from it. But not only his, there was another, in some ways similar to their own, but at the same time different. At that moment, a dreadful doubt arose in his mind, a doubt that tormented him from the day in which he had begun to have that recurrent nightmare. He feared, in fact, that the nightmare was to become a reality.

Meanwhile, a figure was observing an unconscious Mew, asleep inside an isolating sphere specially created for him. The figure laughed.

"He will come, Mew. He will come. Don't you worry."

The next day, Mewtwo commenced his investigations. While he was sifting the area around Rainbow Mountain, he desperately tried to reach Mew telepathically, even for only a second, in order to have the proof that he was still alive.

Mew, for his part, had awaken from his drowsy state and he too tried to contact Mewtwo telepathically.

"It's useless to worry so much, Mew. You powers cannot get through that barrier, and you know it very well."

An angry Mew turned to face the figure. "It's you who don't understand. Mewtwo will find me for sure!"

"Ahahah!" the figure sneered. "You do not understand that that is exactly what I want. I want Mewtwo to come here to me."

Mew's eyes opened wide in terror, when finally he understood the true goal of the being in front of him.

At just that moment, Mewtwo felt a flow of psychic energy course through his mind. It was feeble and had lasted for only a fraction of a second, but Mewtwo was sure that it belonged to Mew, and he headed towards where he had felt the origin of that call. He noticed that the call came from a cave near the river. It's strange, he thought, not to feel more of Mew's energy. On the other hand, he sensed a stronger presence of someone else there. It's similar to us, but stronger. As he penetrated into the cave, he could sense the psychic energy more and more.

"I have the feeling that there's going to be a battle here," he said. He set off along a seemingly endless corridor and considered the likelihood that the same cave had been created by mental powers. "Who could've made all this?" he wondered.

Proceeding through the corridor, he entered a large hall, whose floor was a good ten metres or so deeper than the point where Mewtwo had entered. And, in the middle of the room, inside a protective sphere, was Mew. "Then it is because of that sphere," he thought, "that we weren't able to contact each other." As he descended and approached the sphere in order to shatter it, Mew from the inside gestured to him not to approach. Then, when he was only a few metres from the sphere, he was repelled back and violently hurled against the wall.

"What was that!?" When he had approached, he hadn't perceived anything strange, and it was unusual for him not to sense danger. In his mind echoed a laugh.

"Ahahah! Hello Mewtwo, Welcome to my abode."

Mewtwo turned and saw a creature very simlar to him, only a slightly larger with a long tail, purple like his, and two elongated arms that ended in paws equipped with claws, like those of a Charmeleon. Mewtwo began to be seriously concerned, and anxiously observed the situation inside the sphere.

Mewtwo arose, and, facing the creature, asked him, "Who are you?"

"A pertinent question!" he replied. "My name is Mewthree! I have come to this place with the intention of killing you both. I know very well that I am your clone, and I have been programmed by my creators to do you in. They created me from your genes, and they have combined both of your powers to create me, the strongest creature in the universe! But I have decided to conduct the matter.. in a way of my own."

"But why must you kill us?" asked Mew from inside the sphere.

"It's simple. I possess your memories, and I know very well what you, Mewtwo, did to your creators. All things considered, you should have been grateful to them. If they hadn't created you, you would not be here today!"

Mewtwo began to get angry."

"Perhaps it will interest you to know that I am not at all sorry for what I did!" he said.

"They are not angry with Mew, but they ordered me to kill both of you in revenge. That is why I used him as bait to attract you here. I knew that you would come, because you care about him so much, even though you did all you could to make me believe the contrary. Nevertheless, I have decided to do away with him as well, too brighten the atmosphere."

At that point the atmosphere was extremely tense, Mewtwo was really furious, while Mew, still inside the sphere, had closed his eyes. He did not want to assist the fight that would mark the end of the creature that he cared about most in the world, Mewtwo, his son, and at the same time, his brother.

Mewtwo, though, was already primed for battle. Mewthree attacked with suddenness. Mewtwo, to defend himself, counter-attacked with a Psybeam. The Psybeam knocked Mewthree down flat. At that precise instant, Mew gave out a scream of pain from inside the sphere. Mewtwo was still trying to understand when he heard Mewthree's laugh.

"Oh, excuse me! I forgot to inform you that if you harm me, you also harm Mew, at least as long as he remains in that sphere!"

"What!?" Mewtwo could not believe what he had just heard. Mewthree attacked again, while Mewtwo put up a Barrier. So began a strange battle, with one side only attacking, the other only defending.

Mew, meanwhile, watched the scene. At that short distance, he found that telepathic contact was restored, and Mew could see what was passing through the mind of his "son". He knew that Mewtwo was not attacking Mewthree for fear of harming him, and this riddled him with guilt. He had to do something, and quickly. Suddenly, an idea came to him. With all his might he hurled a Psybeam against the wall of the sphere that held him prisoner. But the attack ricocheted and struck him down.

Mewthree and Mewtwo stopped, the latter noticeably tired and strained.

"Ahahah!" It's useless to fret yourself too much, Mew! You will never be able to break that sphere. You will only be wasting your energy."

But Mew, meanwhile, was communicating telepathically with Mewtwo.

"Stop and listen! You can't continue only defending yourself, you must counter-attack."

"But..."

"There's no 'but'! I only tell you that for each of your attacks that miss, I won't hesitate to hit myself."

At that point, Mewtwo looked at Mew with an indescibable look. His "father" (who in actual fact more closely looked like a younger brother) had never spoken to him before in such a determined tone, and had never been angry with him. Mewtwo was still perplexed when Mew shouted to him:"

"What are you waiting for? Hurry up and fight!"

At that moment, Mewthree attacked again. This time, Mewtwo, instead of defending himself, teleported up to Mewthree, then struck at close distance with a most powerful attack, Psychic Focus. Mewthree shouted in pain, and so did Mew. Nevertheless, attacks followed from both sides, while Mew's sphere accumulated a great quantity of psychich energy at very high pressure. Mew began to feel the effects, and he knew that soon he would lose consciousness.

Then the sphere burst. Fortunately for Mew, it had been unable to sustain so much psychic energy at once. A semi-conscious Mew fell to the ground. Lying there, unable to get up, he watched the scene. Mewthree knew that if Mew and Mewtwo battled together, they would cetainly be something to be concerned about, and so he decided to make an end of it immediately. "It won't be that difficult to bring him down," he thought, "now that he's so weak."

He attacked Mew with Psywave, but he had calculated badly. In fact, Mewtwo, seeing Mew in difficulty, interposed himself between him and the attack, calling up a Barrier.

Mewthree, somewhat annoyed by Mewtwo's intervention, attacked him with a Supersonic attack. Mewtwo was immobile, on his feet with his eyes closed and his head lowered. He could no longer move, and Mewthree wasn't going to lose his chance: he hurled himself at Mewtwo at great speed, and struck him violently against the wall of the cave. Mew, who in the mean time had the opportunity to Recover, saw Mewtwo in difficulty and hurled himself with all his might at Mewthree, who managed to move in time, avoiding himself any harm.

While Mew kept Mewthree busy, Mewtwo Recovered from his wounds and returned to the attack. At that point things were becoming difficult indeed for Mewthree. Given the combined power of his two adversaries, it would have been practically impossible for him to resist for much more. "Damn! There's nothing left for me but..." Mewthree began to accumulate energy.

Mew and Mewtwo realized what he had in mind.

"Oh no, he's won't Self-destruct, will he?"

"I fear that he really will, Mew"

"But that's terrible, Then everything within a mile's radius will be destroyed!"

"Indeed! How do you feel? You seem badly hurt."

"I've seen better days. The trouble is, I don't have enough energy left to teleport far enough away. Mewtwo, what about you?"

Mewtwo, meanwhile, stood in front of Mew to prevent him being swallowed up by the immense energy vortex forming around Mewthree.

"I have enough energy left to teleport myself, but what do you think I should do?"

"Don't think of me, Mewtwo! Save yourself at least!"

Mewthree then finished accumulating energy, emitted a distortion in the air, and from the ground arose gigantic clouds of dust.

"Oh no! We don't have enough time," shouted Mewtwo. Saying so, he enclosed Mew in a blue sphere before he could realize anything.

"But... Mewtwo! What are you doing?" said Mew.

"I will not leave without you," he said, while large tears gushed out of his eyes. Mewtwo looked at him with his eyes shining, and smiled: "Goodbye, Mew, and forgive me all that I've made you go through." Having said this, the sphere with Mew inside lit up and disappeared, but the voice of a desperate Mew calling him reached Mewtwo all the same.

An explosion... and then, nothing more.

Mew recovered his senses... he slowly opened one eye, almost unconscious, hardly remembering anything of the terrible battle he had lived through a few hours ago. Yes, hours, since the battle had begun shortly after noon, and it was sunset by now. Then a name leapt into his mind: Mewtwo! His memories gradually surfaced, and Mew remembered Mewthree, his prison, and Mewtwo's desperate attempts to save him, his last words, his apologies...

Immediately, almost without stopping to think, Mew returned to the scene of the explosion, to look for Mewtwo. Their telepathic contact had been interrupted once more. But he found nothing, only an expanse of arid earth where once there had been a forest. Desperate and despondent, he returned to Rainbow Mountain, crying.

By now a week had passed since the time Mewtwo died. Mew did nothing but cry for all that time. His friends, Pikachu and Pichu, came to him and tried to console him, but all was useless. He continued to relive in his dreams all that had happened, and every time he awoke with a start crying that name: "Mewtwo!" He surprised himself that he had tears left to cry. The days followed, one after the other, without him managing to go through them. That day, he died also. What was there to live for without his "son", his "brother", without Mewtwo.

Infinte sadness.

Mew closed his eyes and sighed. Suddenly, however, he opened his beautiful blue eyes again, sprung up, and raised his head looking straight in front of him.

"It... it's not possible..."

"It's still early to cry, Mew!" A far too familiar voice brought him back to reality. Even before the voice's owner made himself seen, he remembered it and called him by name:

"Mewthree! What are you doing here? How did you survive?"

The voice's owner finally appeared, with only a sneer printed on his face.

"One question at a time, kitten! The fact is, I survived the explosion thanks to a psychic Barrier that I created with the little energy I had left. Oh, I'm displeased to note that your favourite descendant is not present. I'm sorry for you... but, after all, the fault is only yours. He could have escaped instead of teleporting you away!"

Mew had trully become furious, partly because of the name Mewthree had called, but primarily because of what he had done to him. Meanwhile, Mewthree continued his discourse.

"To sacrifice himself in order to protect you was an absolutely futile gesture."

But Mew was no longer listening to him. He had begun to concentrate. I will avenge you, Mewtwo, I swear! Shaking in anger, he held his head low and had his eyes obscured in shadow. Then, turning around to Mewthree, he said in a low voice:

"This is the first time I have every shaken with rage—I have never been so furious with someone as I am now."

Mewthree's eyes widened. He attempted to create a Barrier. But Mew concentrated his powers to the full, and burst them forth in one go. Mewthree was hurled several yards by the force of the blow, and was unable to get back up again before Mew was upon him. His attacks followed, fast and unpredictable, marked by an implacable hatred and anger towards Mewtwo's assassin. He couldn't do without him. "He died to save me! He could have survived if it were not for me. I would have died in his place."

At these sudden considerations, Mew stopped, and a dreadful certainty formed in his mind: "If he is dead, the fault is mine! It was all my fault."

Mewthree read Mew's mind and seized his opportunity. He began to torment Mew, who remained unresponsive, but started to cry once again.

"Indeed you are right! Mewtwo would still be alive if it were not for you!"

"He would be alive... alive... alive..." These words echoed ceaselessly in Mew's mind. Suddenly he resumed the ardour with which he had initiated the battle, and hurled himself at Mewthree with the clear intention of striking him. Strangely, however, he stopped, widening his eyes, still in tears. He collapsed to the ground, holding his head with both his little paws.

But why, he thought! Why didn't I hit him? It.. it seemed to me... in the eyes of Mewthree...

In fact, Mewthree's face and that of Mewtwo were practically identical, only instead of the beautiful bright purple colour of Mewtwo's eyes, Mewthree's were red, red like blood.

Mewthree sneered. It had not been Mew's immagination. Mewthree, taking advantage of Mew's distraction, manipulated his mind, making him believe that he had Mewtwo in front of him. This time, Mewthree was about to attack, but Mew did not make any reaction.

"Good, good! The affection you nurse for your clone will be your ruin, kitten!" Mew did not react, but observed the creature he had before him... or rather, that which he believed to be before him.

"Mewtwo..."

Hew say the creature preparing to attack him. If he did not react, in his present state he would die for sure. Then, however, the days preceding Mewthree's first attack returned to his mind... he remembered the day when he was playing with his friends... the bubble burst and Mewtwo spared him a set of broken bones. He gave a feeble smile at that thought.

A puff of wind suddenly brought a small piece of fabric into contact with Mew. Mew turned his head, and very nearly had a heart attack at the realization of what he was dealing with. He stretched a paw weakly and grasped the shred of fabric... yellow. He opened his eyes wide.

"It... it can't be! This is..." It was his little yellow bow. "Take hold of this, so that even if our paths separate, you wil never forget me!" This is what Mewtwo had said to him when he had given him that bow. Mew suddenly remembered everything. He clenched his teeth with a force that he never expected to possess and shouted: "Mewtwo would never wish to harm me!" Saying this, he collected the small strength that he had left in his body and attacked Mewthree.

Mewthree was surprised. He could have sworn that by now Mew would be under his control, or at least senseless with grief. Yet Mew's inferiority was evident, and Mewthree was finally preparing to finish him, when he was slammed violently into one tree, then another, then smashed against a boulder.

In spite of the violence of the blow, Mewthree immediately got up. "Who dares?"

"And who dares to ask?"

"That voice..." thought Mew. It couldn't be. "Mewtwo!"

Even Mewthree was visibly surprised. "What are you doing here? You should be dead!"

"It must be that to heal my wounds is one of the things I know to do well!" Mewtwo looked at Mew who was lying on the ground, completely drained of strenth.

"Mewtwo..." Mew looked at him with his most beautiful blue eyes before he lost consciousness.

Some hours later, when he awoke, Mew found himself at home at the foot of Rainbow Mountain. From outside, it seemed like some kind of cave, but inside there was a parallel world formed by their mental powers, a world full of meadows, flowers, rivers and everything else of beauty that nature had to offer. In the magical place he had been born and had grown up together with others of his species.

Mew sighed. "Mewtwo?"

"Does someone call me?"

"Where's Mewthree? Did you defeat him?"

"No, unfortunately I alone cannot stand up to him."

"And now where has he gone?"

"I think he has gone somewhere to recover. All things considered, it's better to postpone the deciseve battle for better days."

"Yes, you're right."

Mewthree, meanwhile, had gone inside a cave to heal his numerous wounds that he had received during the last encounter. "Damn! It mustn't finish like this. According to how my creators programmed me, I should have killed them both without much effort. Instead, it is twice that we have clashed, and twice that I have failed! It is probably because of that absurd bond that has formed between them over the years... Ah, but of course! If that bond were broken... Goodbye!"

Mew and Mewtwo were having their own discussion.

"Will you tell me how you managed to survive?"

"What do you want me to say? I think I've already explained it. After the explosion, I realized that I had survived, and then I went to heal my wounds."

"Yes, but... Huh!?"

"Greeting, my dear little brothers!" sounded a voice.

"Grrr, how I hate him!"

"I would know!"

"I am sending you both a message telepathically, in order to tell you that I have taken my decision. I await the two of you tomorrow precisely at noon near the river that runs to the east of Rainbow Mountain. Tomorrow, and... know that next time I willl not have pity. Hahaha!"

"How I hate him! That creature's sending me into a temper!"

"I would suggest, Mew, that you save some of your anger for tomorrow."

"Yes, you're right. Tomorrow either we win or we lose."

"We will either manage to defeat him, or we both die."

"What a wonderful prospect!" They both sighed.

"However, Mewtwo..." The small Pokémon approached Mewtwo, looking at him wishfully. "You must promise me not to die, not this time. I do not wish to lose the creature that I care for!"

Mewtwo smiled. "I will try. Don't worry."

The next day, on the bank of the river...

"On perfect time, I see! Do you have the wish to die?" Mew and Mewtwo did not reply. The only looked at him impassively. Mew somersaulted. "Have you lost your tongue?"

"We have come to fight, not for something else."

"Why rush? Calm down, Mewtwo." With that remark, the battle began: Mew and Mewtwo against Mewthree. Initially, the pair had a certain advantage, but Mewthree did not delay to regain ground. He attacked with a rapid series of psychic attacks, so fast and frequent that they were difficult to avoid. One of these attacks was particularly harsh. Mewtwo, struck with Mewthree's full fury, collapsed to the ground. Mew reached him immediately and when he was at his side, Mewtwo spoke to him telepathically.

"Mew, listen to me well. I believe that I have found a way to defeat him: the only way to defeat him, or at least to seriously harm him, is to act as one. We must unite our powers and our minds and attack together. Only in this way do we have some chance of victory."

"I agree. After all, we have no recourse left. We have nothing to lose, save our lives..."

"We'll do this: you stay near and concentrate your aura to the maximum. You must not release your power, but control yourself and make it flow inside of you. I will do the same and then we will attack."

"OK!"

So, Mew and Mewtwo prepared to attack. Mewthree, who did not manage to understand why the two didn't attack him, tried to form a protective barrier around him, but realized that Mewtwo had momentarily blocked his powers, preventing him from forming any defense.

"Now, Mew! Attack!"

The combined powers of the two were released in unison, forming an immense column of energy that surrounded Mewthree, seeking him like a target. The terrific explosion destroyed everything within miles. Mew and Mewthree teleported themselves away just in time. As soon as the thick cloud of dust dispersed, they observed to their dismay that not even their combined force had sufficed.

"Damnation! We could not do away with him even with our combined powers."

"Yes," replied Mew, "and now what...?"

"Mew? Do you feel well?"

Mew noticed a residual of their psyhic power was still combined, and was gradually moving and changing form.

"What is it?"

"You're asking me?"

Even Mewthree observed the scene impassively. The residual psychic energy formed itself into something new, a Mew, waggin its tail as it floated in the air.

"What on earth is that?"

The Mew opened his eyes. They were purple, exactly like those of Mewtwo, and their expression was the same. His body, however, was like that of Mew, only of light blue colour and with a slightly shorter tail. He smiled a bit and said:

"I am Myuu. Who are you?"

"I'm Mew, that's Mewtwo and over there's Mewthree. We two have just been fighting him, and we have to—"

"Yes, I know. I am familiar with your struggle. Don't forget that I have been born of the union of your powers."

"Yes, indeed! Can you explain to me how you did it?"

"I don't exactly know. I only know that when your powers were united, I was formed. However, I have decided that I too want to help you in tis battle. Provided that you agree!"

"Certainly! After all, the more we are, the better ti is! True, Mewtwo?"

"Yes..."

Meanwhile, Mewthree was thinking of a way to resolve the situation. Damn! Now there are too many! I can't face all three of them by myself. Moreover, that small blue one is very strong. If all three attack me together, it'll be the end of me for sure! One moment... perhaps I've found the suitable thing to help me.

Meanwhile, the three, or rather the four, put themselves in position to attack. Mewthree resumed his perfidious sneer. Mewtwo, Mew and Myuu didn't understand his behaviour. Ultimately, he was now in a clear position of disadvantage—both sides knew it—so he did not have cause to smile like that.

"Do you believe you've got me beat just because there's now three of you? Bah! You've reckoned badly. I still have an ace up my sleeve. I wouldn't've wanted to use it, but you've forced me!" Having said this, he produced a sphere, similar to a Poké Ball, but pitch black. "I inform you that whoever gets struck by one of these balls will immediately be transformed into a demon, and my follower."

"Coward!" shouted Mewtwo, who, to avoid the spheres, constructed a barrier to protect himself. Mew instead evaded them nimbly by teleporting, and Myuu... the balls were not attacking him, goodness knows why. Suddenly, a sphere headed towards Mew's side at great velocity, who, though he realized, did not shift his position in time. Mew reopened his eyes, and noticed that the ball had not struck him, but Mewtwo. At the last moment, he had shattered his barrier and teleported in front of Mew, and the ball struck him.

"Again... you have sacrificed yourself again to protect me, Mewtwo! Can anyone know why you did it?" Mew was crying again.

Before he was completely transformed, Mewtwo said to him, "If I were to tell you that I did it because I didn't want you to become a demon, what would you reply?"

"That you're mad!"

Mewtwo smiled at him, perhaps for the last time, and his eyes turned red. Then he teleported to Mewthree's side, reappearing as Dark Mewtwo. He had a completely black body, and two red eyes that were vacant.

"Ahahah! Now he has become my faithful servant. He has become a perfect fighting machine. He will blindly obey every command that I give him!"

Mew was now in a state of total panic. He was crying and in the mean time asking himself, "What can I do alone?"

"You are not alone! I am here with you! We shall succeed if we battle together!" Myuu tried to console him in order to make him regain some courage, and Mew nodded weakly.

Meanwhile, Mewthree was speaking with Dark Mewtwo.

"Now, Mewtwo, listen to me well: you and I shall unite into one body, to form a single destructive machine for battle."

Dark Mewtwo nodded, and they united into a single body. This is how Evil Mew came to be, the most ruthless creature ever to appear on this earth.

Mew could not believe his eyes. Evil Mew was completely identical to Mewthree, except that he wore a kind of armour, and had a long horn on his muzzle.

Evil Mew sprang to attack, revealing a fury and violence without precedent. Suddenly, Myuu contacted Mew telepathically:

"Listen, Mew! I now know how we can win! I can shift him to another dimension and keep him blocked off until you absorb him into your body. I'm sure you have the power to do it!"

"But I..."

"You what?"

"I can't do it! I don't have the courage, as long as Mewtwo is there with him!"

"What are you waiting for, stupid! It is the last chance left to us!"

"What? But... how...?"

Mew and Myuu watched Evil Mew and noticed that the creature's eyes flashed red and purple, as if they did not know how to decide.

"I see," said Myuu." Even if Mewtwo has become the servant of Mewthree, a part of his consciousness is still alert, and is there helping us."

"Perfect! So he makes me feel guilty again! But if we really must do it, then let's do it quickly!"

So they put their plan into action. It succeeded, and Evil Mew was absorbed into Mew's body (and consequently also Mewtwo and Mewthree). Mew, having absorbed their powers, increased in strength immensely and became Mega Mew, while maintaining his appearance as a small pink cat. Myuu and Mew returned to the cavern that was Mew's home.

"What a lovely place!" exclaimed Myuu as soon as he realized the cave's "secret". "You and Mewtwo lived here?"

"Please don't mention him! And in any case, all my family used to live here," said the psychic cat with a touch of sadness in his voice.

"And where is your family?"

Mew sighed. "If you'll listen, I'll tell you the story."

"Please do."

"Well then, these things happened a long time ago. Even I don't know precisely how much time has passed.

"I was still a cub at the time, and I lived here in this cave together with thousands of others of my kind. There were many of us, and we lived happily, happy and free. We knew that we were the most powerful Pokémon in the world, but we didn't give that much concern.

"One day, however, some people discovered the cave, and caught many of us, until only I was left. I remained the only free Mew in the world. I wasn't sure what to do. The first thing I thought of was to free the others. I first directed myself to a laboratory where there were some of us, but what could I do alone? I was still so young and inexperienced. They tried to catch me too but I escaped. Then I directed myself to all the trainers who had a Mew and spoke with many of my kind, who, to my great surprise, said"

"'Go away, Mew! We have decided by our own choice to be trained. We don't want to come with you!'

"That revelation left me dumbfounded. I couldn't believe it! They wanted to be trained, they had renounced their freedom to end up in the hands of some stupid humand beings!

"Lonely and desperate, I returned to Rainbow Mountain. Eventually I learned that all the Mew except for me had died. I don't know how, but they were dead. I was the only Mew in the world! My name was already a legend. From that moment, I decided that I would never have offspring, because I didn't want other Mew after me to suffer what I have suffered.

"But then, about three years ago, I discovered that some scientists intended to clone me, and came here to the Rainbow Mountain to look for fossil remains. I decided to play their game, and so, two years ago, Mewtwo, my "son" came to be. I said that I would never have offspring, but he had become the most important thing to me.

"I was having dreams, dreaming to be imprisoned, encased in glass. When I finally got free, I became enclosed in a new cage. I was infuriated by the human beings that were surrounding me, because they had only created me to be a copy of someone else. When I understood the meaning of these dreams, I realized that I couldn't leave Mewtwo alone, and I decided to help him in some way. By then, he had become my family.

Mew was crying as he was saying these words.

"I understand," replied Myuu, who thought to himself: "Many years have gone by since that day, but Mew has not recovered his carefree smile that he always had. Or rather, he always has a very sweet smile, but his eyes are perpetually sad. He is perfectly aware that Mewtwo has not trully died, but continues to live in him. Yet he would want to see him again. I would like to help him, but I don't know what to do. However, perhaps..."

"Myuu."

"What is it?"

"I can't manage any more. I would like to see Mewtwo again, even for only a second. I miss him so much..."

Myuu smiled, saying, "Perhaps we can do something..."

"What do you mean?"

"It's simple. We'll make him leave your body!"

Mew sighed. "But then Mewthree will also leave."

"Wrong! Before you absorbed Evil Mew, I did it in a way that the two separated. Well then? Shall we try? I've got a certain wish to see Mewtwo again too. I liked him, even though he had never addressed a word to me."

As the two concentrated, the body of Mew—that is, Mega Mew—brightened slightly. Suddenly, he became enveloped by a silvery glow of power. He separated into two: one part returned to be Mew, the other became Mewtwo. Myuu smiled in satisfaction.

Mew was panting after the mental effort that he exerted, and had not yet looked around. Mewtwo, though, opened his eyes.

"Hello!" greeted Myuu cheerfully. "Happy to see you again."

"Ah, you're what was born from the union of my and Mew's powers!"

"I am called Myuu!"

"Then I'm pleased to meet you Myuu. It's the first time we're officially introduced."

"The pleasure is mine, Mewtwo."

Meanwhile, Mew saw the scene before him, with a look mixed between astonishment and joy. Myuu noticed with pleasure that they had regained their peace and joy of living.

"Mewtwo! It's really you! You're saved! I'm so happy to see you again!"

Saying this, he took a short run and hurled himself up to Mewtwo, weeping and embraced him in a way that he was not able to do in such a long time.
