Charmander evolved to Charmeleon after battling an army of Exeggutor in The Battle of the Exeggutor Squad. It chose to evolve to Charizard in Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon so that it could fly and chase an Aerodactyl.

Charizard was frozen by an Ice Beam in Charizard Chills, because it wouldn't obey Ash and tried to battle on its own. After Ash worked all night to restore it to health, Charizard realized that he and Ash needed each other and decided to obey his trainer.

In Charizard's Burning Ambitions, Charizard discovered that it was not as strong as even the weakest Charizard in the Charicific Valley. Ash decided to let Charizard stay there to train and reach its full potential.
